Church Wide Fast
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The Advent and Christmas seasons have passed. Christmas decorations are finally packed away. The New Year has begun and it is now time for us to continue on the journey to Lent and Easter.
We will proceed on this voyage with “Walking with Nehemiah: Your Community Is Your Congregation” by Joseph W. Daniels, Jr. Copyright @2014 by Abingdon Press.
Lent is the forty days before Easter. It begins with Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015 and end Easter Eve, April 4, 2015. It is a time of reflections, fasting and preparation. It reminds us of Jesus when he went into the wilderness and fasted for forty days and was tempted by the devil, Matthew 4:1-11. As he continued on his journey, he faced many challenges, pain, betrayal and finally death. But he was resurrected! Praise God!
As your Shepherd for Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church, I am calling for a Church wide fast every Wednesday during this Lenten season. Those dates are February 18, and 25th ; March 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th; and April 1st, 2015. During these days we are asking you to utilize the Daniel Fast program. Resources are available at: www.daniel-fast.com; and another resource by Bill Bright - successful steps to fasting can be found at: www.cru.org/training/andgrowth/devotional/life/7stepstofasting/02howtobegin.
In this Lenten season and specifically on the “Day of Church Wide Fast”, please read Isaiah 58:1- 14 in preparation for your fast. As a body of the church, let us read and focus our prayers on the next steps for the church; breaking the strong holds of wickedness: to include jealousy, resentment, addictions, hatred, confession of sins and repentance; pray for church increase, acceptance of differences-to include gifts and points of view, forgiveness, greater capacity to love, compassion, commitment to mission and ministry, and healing. Our prayers should also include love of God, willingness to obey God’s word and understanding of all that it means to be a disciple (Matthew 28:18-20). We are expecting great things at Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church through prayer and fasting.
